BACKGROUND:

The Water Utilities provides approximately 44,308 residential water meters within the City’s jurisdiction. The water meters are replaced after 16 years of service due to age and the expired warranty period.

In August 2018, the Council approved Bid 18-177 to Core & Main LP to supply residential water meters. The contract covered a two-year term from date of award through December 31, 2020. The contract included three, one-year options to extend and the first extension was approved November 4, 2020.

DISCUSSION:

Core & Main LP performed well during the first option award term, providing the Water Utilities with 528 0.75-inch and one-inch water meters during the first extension term. Also, Core & Main LP continues to provide outstanding technical support. All meter warranty issues were quickly resolved with the customers who received replacement. All new meter installations will function directly with AMI to provide accurate usage readings.

Core & Main LP agreed to extend the contract with no increase in cost. The term of the second option year is January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022, with one option year remaining.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Water meter replacements are expensed to the infrastructure account listed below as part of the capital improvement program. A total of $1,350,000 is budgeted for replacement water meters under WU019 and WU020 in 2022.
