BACKGROUND:
The Fleet Economic Committee and Fleet Services Manager reviewed and approved Unit 296 for replacement. Vehicles are scored for replacement based on four criteria: age, usage, condition and repair costs. Recommending a vehicle for replacement requires a score 28.0 or greater. Unit 296 scored 39.24.
DISCUSSION:
Unit 296 is a 2005 International 7400 tandem axle dump truck with plow that is used by the Department of Public Works - Operations Division. The unit is used throughout the year for leaf collection, brush pick-up, salt applications, and snow removal. The current unit can only be used in applications where a dump truck body is required.
This unit will be replaced with a 2022 Peterbilt 348 tandem axle truck upfit with a plow and hydraulic hook lift, and two separate bodies: flat-bed body and dump body.
The hydraulic hook lift expands the flexibility of one chassis for use with multiple body applications. It will enable staff to remove the dump body from the truck and roll-on the flat-bed body, without the cost of a second chassis.
Currently, crews use two trucks with trailers to load equipment necessary during asphalt patching season. With the flat-bed, crews would be able to use one truck with a trailer in tandem to transport equipment needed. This reduces fuel consumption and wear and tear on trucks. It also reduces the number of units congesting the roadway in residential areas during patching operations. The hook lift also frees a second truck and trailer for other operational use.
Eventually, staff intends to add a separate container body to use in operations such as sandbagging to reduce operational downtime for the truck.
