BACKGROUND:
Century Walk Corporation is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation established in 1996 to create culturally significant and diverse public art throughout Naperville in the 21st Century ("Century Walk").
Century Walk funds art installations through a combination of private and public fund raising, often including significant contributions from the City.
On August 17, 2021, the Naperville City Council directed that the City shall designate to Century Walk a Capital Grant of $100,000 in calendar years 2022, 2023 and 2024 to assist Century Walk with financing the establishment of specific public art projects subject to certain conditions.
On August 17, 2021, the Naperville City Council directed that the City shall designate to Century Walk a Maintenance Grant $50,000 in calendar years 2022, 2023 and 2024 to assist Century Walk with maintaining the public art; and
On April 18, 2023, the Naperville City Council approved an agreement between the City and Century Walk and approved the award of a $100,000 Capital Grant and a $50,000 Maintenance Grant to Century Walk for Calendar Year 2023.
DISCUSSION:
Century Walk has exhausted its CY 2023 $50,000 Maintenance Grant but has not used any of its CY 2023 $100,000 Capital Grant.
Century Walk does not plan to use its CY 2023 $100,000 Capital Grant in 2023.
There are several existing Century Walk art pieces that are in immediate need of maintenance, including, but not limited to:
1. Ladder of Light sculpture;
2. Parting the Prairie sculpture;
3. Way We Were mural;
4. Parade of the Centuries mural;
5. Streaming History mural; and
6. Naperville Loves a Parade mural.
