As the SECA Commission enters its second year with the public arts mission, there are opportunities to expand its role.
In addition to the annual review of applications, voting on student art projects to display on banners and traffic signal boxes, and designing the Naperville Salute banner for veterans, there are initiatives planned for 2023 that will need SECA Commission involvement.
As part of the 2023 budget discussions, the City Council approved $250,000 for the design and placement of gateway entrance signs. Staff was directed to facilitate a public input process before presenting a final design recommendation to the City Council.
Also, staff has attended Downtown Advisory Commission meetings where new downtown wayfinding signs have been discussed.
It is reasonable to plan that the SECA Commission will facilitate the public input process for one or both initiatives.
Lastly, staff is considering changing the theme of the Naperville Salute banner from veterans to first responders for 2023. SECA Commission members will be asked to assist with either developing the design, or choosing from a number of design submissions, for this year’s banner.
