BACKGROUND:
The Building Review Board (BRB) has nine members with five professional roles specifically defined in the areas of: architecture, plumbing, electrical construction and construction contracting, with an additional four members serving at-large. The specificity required by the professional roles has contributed to lengthy delays in filling vacancies on the BRB. Qualified candidates for the at-large positions are often available, however, they cannot be appointed if they do not meet the specific requirements of the professional roles. The changes are predicated on the importance of filling vacancies on the BRB in a timely manner and ensuring the effectiveness of the Board in fulfilling its powers and duties.
DISCUSSION:
The proposed text amendment has been revised based on feedback at the September 7, 2021 City Council meeting. If applications are not received for a vacant professional position, other applicants can be considered, interviewed, and appointed (pending Council approval) based on qualifications. This revision will also enable a greater diversity of candidates to apply for and serve.
