BACKGROUND:

Unit 259, a 2008 International 7400 tandem axle dump truck, was reviewed and approved by the Fleet Economic Committee and Fleet Services Manager for replacement in the 2021 budget. Vehicles are scored for replacement based on four criteria: age, usage, condition and repair costs. Recommending heavy equipment for replacement requires a score 28.0 or greater. Unit 259 scored 29.84.

DISCUSSION:

Unit 259 is used by the Department of Public Works - Operations Division. The truck is upfit with a dump body, plow, spreader, centralized hydraulic system, pre-wet system and rear hydraulic cross conveyor.

It is used year-round to haul material for asphalt patching, highway shouldering and rut filling. The unit is also used for snow removal and ice control. Crews use the rear cross conveyor to safely and efficiently unload material, whether stationary or while driving and replacing shoulder gravel.

Unit 259 will be replaced with a 2022 Peterbilt 348 tandem axle dump truck upfit consistently to perform the same functions. The unit is specified to maintain fleet conformity. The new vehicle is available on the Sourcewell Cooperative, an approved cooperative through JX Peterbilt, Contract 060920-PMC.

The current vehicle will be traded-in to JX Peterbilt for $10,250 as part of the purchase of the new vehicle. Using the City’s specifications, JX Peterbilt quoted the 2022 Peterbilt 348 tandem axle dump truck in the amount of $229,964.48; a cost breakdown is provided below.
