BACKGROUND:

Residents of the Woodlake Subdivision sent a request to the Transportation Team to evaluate a safety concern related to semi-truck parking on Cantore Road, east of Forgue Drive.  The specific concern was that the semi-trucks parking on-street were limiting sight distance needed for southbound traffic exiting Forgue Drive to view oncoming vehicles.

DISCUSSION:

The Transportation Team evaluated this safety concern and followed the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) guidelines for sight distance.  Based on these sight distance standards, the parked trucks can block the line of sight necessary for vehicles to safely exit Forgue Drive given the posted speed limit for Cantore Road under the standard parking regulations.

Restricting the parking on both the north and south side of Cantore Road from IL Route 59 to a distance 165 feet east of the Forgue Drive edge of pavement will provide the appropriate clear line of sight for vehicles exiting Forgue Drive onto Cantore Road. The parking is being restricted on both sides of Cantore Road to prevent a similar sight distance concern on the opposite side of the street.  Staff also recommends prohibiting parking between IL Route 59 and Forgue Drive to avoid potential vehicular conflicts with the turn lanes that develop closer to the IL Route 59 intersection.
