BACKGROUND:

The Soap Box Derby is organized by the Greater Chicago Soap Box Derby Association.  The races have occurred annually in Naperville for the past several years and no problems have been reported. On April 21, 2020, the City Council approved and established temporary traffic controls for this year’s races in May, June, September, and October.

DISCUSSION:

Due to COVID19, the races scheduled for May and June were canceled.  The event organizer has now requested that the previously approved races for September and October be rescheduled to the following weekend dates:

                     September 26-27

                     October 17-18

Each event will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and require the temporary closure of Frontenac Road from Golfview Drive to Diehl Road from approximately 6:30 a.m. and to no later than 6:00 p.m. each day.

The Greater Soap Box Derby Association has notified all surrounding businesses of the changes to their September and October events and the businesses are in agreement.  Parking for participants has been secured at parking lots in the area. The event organizer is also requesting an amplifier permit for the event.  The City will receive the required insurance prior to the issuance of the Special Event Permit.

To ensure a safe event, races will be conducted in accordance with all state and local Executive Orders and CDC guidelines.

FISCAL IMPACT:

All costs associated with this event are billed to the event organizer.
