BACKGROUND:

The Soap Box Derby is organized by the Greater Chicago Soap Box Derby Association.  The races have occurred annually in Naperville for the past several years and no problems have been reported.

DISCUSSION:

The Soap Box Derby Races are scheduled to occur on May 2-3, June 6-7, September 12-13 and October 10-11.  Each event will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with an estimated 75 people in attendance at each race.  The races require the temporary closure of Frontenac Road from Golfview Drive to Diehl Road from approximately 6:30 a.m. and will re-open no later than 6:00 p.m. each day.

As in past, the Greater Soap Box Derby Association will notify all surrounding businesses of the event.  Parking for participants has been secured at parking lots in the area. The event organizer is also requesting an amplifier permit for the event.  The city will receive the required insurance prior to the issuance of the Special Event Permit.

As of the agenda publishing date, staff has not been notified of the organizer’s intent to cancel any race in 2020 due to COVID-19. All races will be conducted in accordance with all state and local Executive Orders and CDC guidelines to ensure a safe event.

FISCAL IMPACT:

All costs associated with this event are billed to the event organizer.
