BOARD/COMMISSION REVIEW:

BACKGROUND:
In 2004, DuPage Country Created a workgroup tasked with creating the DuPage County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan ("Plan"). Group members included representatives of DuPage County, local municipalities, and institutions. The Plan's purpose is to identify activities which can be undertaken by both public and private sectors to reduce safety hazards, health hazards and property damage caused by natural hazards. The Plan focuses on the major natural hazards facing DuPage County including:
* Floods
* Severe summer storms
* Winter storms
* Tornados
* Extreme heat events

The City adopted the DuPage County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan in 2007. However; the Plan is required to be updated every five (5) years. The 2018 Plan was submitted to and approved by IEMA in 2018. FEMA also approved the plan in 2018. The Plan does not commit the City to any new initiatives; it merely details assignments and activities the City already carries out as part of our preparedness. Furthermore, FEMA requires an adopted Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan prior to award of Natural Hazard Mitigation Grants.

DISCUSSION:
The 2018 Plan has been reviewed by Emergency Management, TED, and Public Works with respects to their area of assignment. The following assignments have been discussed and accepted with the participation departments:

* Improvement of Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS) Rating
* Property Protection Checklist
* Property Protection Projects
