body
DEPARTMENT: Transportation, Engineering and Development
SUBMITTED BY: William J. Novack, Director of TED/City Engineer
BOARD/COMMISSION REVIEW:
At their March 6, 2018 meeting the Planning, Design and Construction Committee recommended forwarding this request to the Riverwalk Commission for consideration
BACKGROUND:
The Riverwalk Maintenance Agreement between the Naperville Park District and the City requires that all additions to the Naperville Riverwalk be approved by the Riverwalk Commission, Naperville Park District and the City of Naperville. The boundaries of the Riverwalk were expanded last year to include the grass area north of the Naperville Municipal Center.
Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico proposed an outdoor smart park at this location last year, and has secured private funding to design and construct the park. The primary donor is the Naperville Jaycees, so the park is proposed to be named the Naperville Jaycee’s Park. Attached are preliminary design drawings and a link to a video of what the park will look like.
DISCUSSION:
The Naperville Riverwalk Commission needs to vote on this addition to the Riverwalk before it can be sent to the Naperville Park District and the City for their consideration. The design of the park includes a solar field that will be located on the roof of the Municipal Center which will provide power for the smart features of the park. Any excess power generated will be sold back onto the power grid, which will provide funding for maintenance by the City. Every day and long-term maintenance will be performed by the City of Naperville Department of Public Works, the same group that has been maintaining this area since the Municipal Center was constructed.
