BACKGROUND:
Under New Business at the June 6, 2017 City Council meeting, staff was directed to bring back a revision to Chapter 18 (Local Liquor Commission) increasing the number of Liquor Commissioners from seven to nine.
DISCUSSION:
The Mayor as the Liquor Commissioner may appoint a person or persons to assist in carrying out his duties for local liquor and tobacco control. The Commissioners serve at the authority of the Liquor Commissioner as his advisors.
Currently, the Liquor Commission is comprised of seven members and the Liquor Commissioner seeks to increase this number to nine members. The change is predicated upon the importance of maintaining proper health, safety, and welfare protections for the community. The issues that surround liquor licensing and enforcement are important and produce lengthy and complex discussions; an increased number of commissioners will result in more oversight of these issues and enhanced perspectives that will aid the Liquor Commissioner in making crucial decisions.
