DISCUSSION:

Fire Chief’s Citizen Award- an award presented by the Fire Chief to citizens or civic groups for distinguished acts of meritorious service to their fellow citizens and to their community, which promote the message of fire protection, fire prevention, and life safety.

BACKGROUND:

On the evening of June 9, 2017, the Naperville Fire Department was called to Kidz Kabaret at 1665 Quincy Avenue for a male patron in cardiac arrest. Daniel and Melissa Lund were at the venue attending a performance of Beauty and the Beast as were Robert McCue and his family. While in the lobby prior to the start of the show, Mr. McCue suddenly collapsed and fell to the floor unconscious. His daughter Mary and the Lunds who were nearby, immediately took action. Mary and Melissa started CPR while Dan went outside to the adjacent businesses to see if one had an AED. He also told bystanders to flag down the fire department upon their arrival and lead them to the patient’s location. Upon his return, he discovered that Kidz Kabaret had an AED on site which was now by Mr. McCue’s side. He took over compressions while Melissa readied the unit. Following directions given by the AED, a shock was administered and CPR was restarted. Soon after, Mr. McCue began to move around a bit. Upon their arrival, the crews of Medic 4 and Engine 7 took over patient care and provided appropriate medical treatment prior to transporting the patient to Edward Hospital.

Mr. McCue’s survival is due in part to the early intervention and accurate response provided by his daughter and Mr. & Mrs. Lund.
