In June 2025, the Riverwalk Commission approved a change to the brick pavers used on the Riverwalk path and plaza areas. (File No. 25-0785)
BACKGROUND:
The Naperville Riverwalk has used the same standard paver, the Stockholm, since it was initially constructed in 1981. See photo below. The original manufacturer was Paveloc, which was eventually bought out by Unilock many years ago. Brick pavers were not as common forty years ago as they are today, and the wavy-edged brick was chosen due to the river-like aesthetic and the belief that the edges would lock the adjacent bricks in place to form one large mat.
In 2024, Unilock informed the City of issues with the Stockholm paver mold that would prevent further use. With several large upcoming projects such as 430 S. Washington Street and the South Extension, the Riverwalk Commission voted to change to a standard, rectangular paver installed in a herringbone configuration at the June 2025 meeting.
DISCUSSION:
After further discussion at the January Riverwalk Commission meeting, staff contacted Unilock regarding the Stockholm paver brick. Last week, staff from the City, Naperville Park District, as well as Jan Erickson and Tim Ball (GRWA) met with Unilock representatives for clarification on the status of the Stockholm paver.
Unilock explained that the mold for the Stockholm paver was over 20 years old and in poor condition. Further, the company has recently replaced their manufacturing equipment, and the old mold is not compatible with the new machinery.
