BACKGROUND:

On September 28, 2019, Dorothy Newlands alleged she was injured by members of the Naperville Fire Department while responding to a 911 call.  In 2020, Ms. Newlands, through her attorney John Risvold of Collins Law, filed suit against the City in DuPage County. The City has denied all liability.

DISCUSSION:

The City and Schuh, as Special Administrator of the Estate of Dorothy Newlands, were successful in mediating a resolution to this matter on December 6, 2024. Without admitting any liability or wrongdoing, the City has agreed to a one-time payment of $95,000 to Schuh, plus reimbursement of mediation costs, to resolve all claims. Schuh has agreed to dismiss the lawsuit.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The City will make a one-time payment of $95,000 to Schuh.
