CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM
ACTION REQUESTED:
title
Pass an ordinance amending the Traffic Schedule to modify parking restrictions in the Historic District
body
DEPARTMENT: Transportation, Engineering and Development
SUBMITTED BY: Sydney Smith, Transportation Project Manager
BOARD/COMMISSION REVIEW:
On June 5, 2025 the Transportation Advisory Board approved a recommendation to modify parking restrictions in the Historic District. Approved 5-0. Staff concurs.
BACKGROUND:
The Historic District is bounded by Washington Street to the west, 4th Avenue to the north, Huffman Street to the east, and Chicago Avenue to the south.
Staff was investigating an unrelated traffic request in the Historic District and identified discrepancies between signed parking restrictions in the field and parking restrictions in the Municipal Code. Specifically, redundant or conflicting ordinances within the Code itself.
DISCUSSION:
Staff recommends modifying the Municipal Code to be consistent with signed parking restrictions in the field.
Many of the ordinances for the Historic District were last modified in the 1990’s when conditions in the neighborhood were different. Parking restrictions have since been modified in the field without being updated in the Code.
If parking issues occur, it is necessary for the Municipal Code to be consistent with signed parking restrictions for enforcement. These proposed modifications would not impact the day-to-day life of residents but would make it easier to enforce parking restrictions and ensure future accuracy.
Attached are maps of parking restrictions as written in the Municipal Code before and after the proposed modifications.
