BACKGROUND:
In September 2021, Contract 21-275 was awarded to Crossroad Construction for structural repairs at the Springbrook Water Reclamation Center. The project includes constructing a new biosolids conveyor support structure, foundations and push wall; demolishing the existing conveyor supports and restoring the concrete paving; sealing of two existing knockout panels on the aeration tanks and repair of aeration tank expansion joint.
DISCUSSION:
A change order for an additional 59 days is necessary for the work to be completed. The temporary conveyor support and conveyor extension system proposed by the contractor was more complex than originally anticipated. Staffing shortages at Springbrook also made coordination and monitoring of the conveyor extension more difficult. The new completion date for the contract will be March 1, 2022.
Also, additional funds are needed to complete work. When excavating for repair of the aeration tank expansion joint, the leakage and condition of the joint was worse than anticipated. Furthermore, while excavating for demolition of the existing conveyor supports, the support foundations were much larger than indicated on the original drawings, requiring additional effort to remove to allow framing and pouring of a new foundation for the proposed conveyor support.
