SUBMITTED BY:                     Marcie Schatz, Assistant to the City Manager

Each fall, millions of monarch butterflies migrate to the state of Michoacán, Mexico.  Near Patzcuaro, a number of protected sanctuaries within a biosphere reserve have been established to ensure that the important habitats required by the Monarch Butterflies are protected and preserved, while still allowing visitors to see the Monarchs.

Embracing the connection between sustainability and our Sister City Patzcuaro, Commissioner See worked throughout 2025 to establish a location for a monarch butterfly garden, create a planting and maintenance plan, and develop signage.   The garden will be located at Knoch Knolls Park near the pedestrian bridge.  The City will be responsible for installing the signage at the garden.

The Commission and Foundation should discuss any outstanding issues including the schedule for funding and planting to ensure project completion in 2026.
