DEPARTMENT: City Manager’s Office
SUBMITTED BY: Commissioner See/Marcie Schatz
Efforts continue to establish a Monarch habitat in Knoch Knolls Park in 2026, planted and maintained by the Sister Cities Commission. The proposed area is on the west/northwest corner of the bike bridge and DuPage River. The current planting bed is large and the commission will plant the north portion of the area.
A sign(s) will also be included to educate the public about monarchs, their migration to areas near Cancun and Patzcuaro, and the Sister Cities program. Dr. See will lead the design of the sign. The City will fabricate and install the sign in accordance with Park District approvals.
The Park District will need to approve both the garden and the sign. We are currently working with the Park District to understand the approval process, requirements and timing.
The Commission will be responsible for planting and maintaining the garden. In order to plant the garden with native and monarch friendly plantings in 2026, it is recommended that the Sister Cities Commission formally request $1,000 in funding from the Sister Cities Foundation to purchase plantings for an estimated 150 square foot garden*.
