BACKGROUND:
At the last couple of meetings, the group looked at and provided comments regarding the existing Naperville Park District sign located on the east side of Washington Street along the proposed South Extension of the Riverwalk. The Park District desires to maintain the community sign at this location. We have been looking at options that keep the sign and limestone wall that it sits on in place as opposed to relocating them to another space.
DISCUSSION:
Based on comments made at prior meetings our consultant has developed a couple of concepts and is seeking input. One idea that came up was pushing the electronic changeable message board closer to Washington Street and providing a framework around it. While this is aesthetically pleasing there may be some challenges in doing this.
The City of Naperville Street Graphics (Sign) Code requires signs along a major arterial roadway to be located at least ten feet back from the property line. While we are not certain of the location of the property line due to the absence of a boundary survey, we believe that if we slide the sign closer to Washington Street we will probably be inside that ten-foot setback. If the committee feels strongly about sliding the sign closer to Washington Street, we can perform the survey work to confirm the property line and then apply and go through the variance process to request relief. The variance process does involve going to the Planning and Zoning Commission and then City Council for approval.
