BACKGROUND:
The Water Utilities issued Bid 17-191 seeking vendors to replace two of three existing water booster pumps and upgrade associated electrical equipment for the Southeast Water Works.
The Southeast Water Works initially constructed in 1980 with three booster pumps, and a three-million-gallon underground reservoir attached the City's ground water supply (wells). In 1986, the station underwent an upgrade adding an additional three million gallons of reservoir capacity (for a total of six million gallons). The station underwent a final change in 1991 with modifications to receive Lake Michigan water from the DuPage Water Commission.
The booster pumps pump water from the site's underground six-million-gallon potable water reservoir into the water distribution system to maintain system pressure and provide water during periods of high demand and emergency fire flows.
Recently, one of the three pumps suffered a catastrophic failure where repairing the pump is not feasible. Additionally, one of the two remaining pumps is demonstrating problems (overheating) and after evaluation staff determined it is near failure and recommends it also be replaced.
All three pumps are at the end of their economic life and replacement is the most economical alternate to restore pumping capacity and ensure system reliability. The bid proposes to replace two of the three pumps. The replacement of the last pump will take place when it begins to show signs of failure.
