BACKGROUND:
In June 2018, the Water Utilities issued Bid 18-145, Grouting of Sanitary Sewer Service Connections and Service Laterals Cress Creek Phase 4, to obtain a contractor to chemically grout 95 sanitary service laterals in the Cress Creek Subdivision. This work is part of a larger ongoing plan to rehabilitate the sanitary sewer system in the subdivision. The goal of the sanitary sewer rehabilitation program is to improve system performance by reducing leaks from storm water runoff and groundwater infiltration (I & I).
Within a year after the flooding event in April 2013, the Water Utilities Department rehabilitated 100% of the mainline sanitary sewer system and sanitary sewer laterals in the Cress Creek Subdivision. Staff continues to work to identify sources of I & I that take up system capacity during wet weather events.
Through flow monitoring and closed circuit TV inspection of the system, staff has identified significant I & I through some of the sanitary sewer laterals. Grouting the laterals will significantly reduce the amount of ground water infiltration into the sanitary sewer system further reducing the likelihood of a basement backup or sanitary sewer overflow.
The combination of sewer and lateral lining projects in the Cress Creek area have made significant improvements in the wastewater system by limiting the infiltration of groundwater and stormwater. For example, when comparing June 2013 to June 2015, the sanitary sewers had lower flows even though there was 50% more rain. In addition, there have been no sanitary sewer backups in Cress Creek since 2013.
