BACKGROUND:
There are three fountains along the Naperville Riverwalk in need of repair and maintenance: Fredenhagen Park Fountain, Horse Trough Fountain at Main and Chicago, and Dandelion Fountain at Webster and Jackson. Fredenhagen Park Fountain is the primary focus of this project. In 2022, due to significant leaking, the fountain was shut down. The City and the Park District, in coordination with the Riverwalk Planning, Design and Construction Committee obtained estimates for repairs. With projected costs higher than expected, the following year was spent exploring options for alternate improvements. Ultimately, it was determined that the fountain liner and the lighting system, which contributed to the leaking, would be replaced to return the fountain to its original condition.
In late 2023, the Park District identified minor issues with the other two fountains. Horse Trough Fountain requires painting and filtration system upgrades to minimize regular maintenance and Dandelion Fountain requires painting. This additional work was included in the bid to reduce overall costs.
In March 2024, the Transportation, Engineering and Development Business Group (TED) issued Bid 24-010, Riverwalk Fountain Repairs, to contract for the repair and maintenance of three fountains.
