BACKGROUND:
At approximately 10:00 pm on March 26, 2017, the Naperville Fire Department responded to the area of Huffman Street and Chicago Avenue for the report of a jogger who had collapsed. Upon the arrival of Truck 1 and Medic 1, they found four bystanders that activated EMS and performed CPR on the patient, 41-year old Matt Smith. According to the fire department crews, the patient received high quality CPR prior to their arrival. The paramedics shocked the patient numerous times and after receiving a response of spontaneous circulation, the patient was transported to the hospital. The patient survived and was discharged from the hospital with no neurological deficits.
Mr. Smith’s survival is due in part to the early intervention and quality CPR he received immediately after collapsing.
DISCUSSION:
Fire Chief’s Citizen Award - an award presented by the Fire Chief to citizens or civic groups for distinguished acts of meritorious service to their fellow citizens and to their community, which promote the message of fire protection fire prevention, and life safety.
