BACKGROUND:
The Department of Public Works - Public Buildings Operations (DPW-PBO) is responsible for maintaining the building, pedestrian walkways, tunnel, stairs, shelters, and lighting at the 4th Avenue Train Station. Over the past several years, DPW-PBO has completed multiple exterior improvements to the station.
In 2020, DPW-PBO completed renovations on the north and south stairwells. Work included adding a coating system to the stairs, ceiling repair, and sanding and painting of the handrails to enhance durability and safety. However, the handrails on the Washington Street stairs have since deteriorated significantly and now require full replacement. Additionally, the sheet metal paneling located beneath the Washington Street Bridge is in poor condition and must also be replaced.
DISCUSSION:
As part of Capital Improvement Project (CIP) MB180, Train Sation Platform, Walkway and Stairwell Repair Program, DPW-PBO intends to have the following work performed:
1. Removal and replacement of four existing handrails along the Washington Street stairs, including patching and upgrades to meet ADA compliance
2. Replace deteriorated sheet metal paneling beneath the Washington Street Bridge on both sides of the street
3. Remove and replace four existing wall signs with new signs that meet City standards
Although this work was not originally planned for 2025, it will significantly improve safety, accessibility, and long-term durability of the station infrastructure. Completion is anticipated by December 31, 2025.
