BACKGROUND:
The Water Utilities operates an extensive network of water supply, wastewater collection, and stormwater pumping stations, as well as one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in Illinois. Each of these facilities contains a wide range of electrical equipment; including switchgear, disconnects, and variable-frequency drives, supporting pumps, valves, monitoring systems, and treatment processes. Safe operation of this equipment is essential to providing reliable drinking water, maintaining effective wastewater conveyance and treatment, and protecting both workers and the environment.
Electrical one-line diagrams are essential for safely operating and maintaining large pump stations because they provide a clear, simplified representation of how power flows through the facility's switchgear, disconnects, breakers, transformers, and motor-control equipment. Accurate one-line diagrams support troubleshooting, outage planning, equipment upgrades, and compliance with safety standards, helping protect personnel, maintain system reliability, and prevent service disruptions.
DISCUSSION:
