The City maintains approximately 466 centerline miles of road through the annual Street Maintenance Improvement Program (MIP). An important component of the MIP is the resurfacing program which ensures that City streets remain in good condition for the movement of traffic while also protecting the integrity of the roadway base. When resurfacing is delayed, the roadway base begins to deteriorate prematurely resulting in the need for costly and disruptive road reconstruction projects.
In 2024, the City will use state Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds to complete two street resurfacing programs. The 2024 Street Resurfacing Program - MFT North will improve streets north of 75th Street. The 2024 Street Resurfacing Program - MFT South, which will be issued for bid later this year, will improve streets south of 75th Street.
The expenditure of state MFT funds requires the approval and supervision of the Illinois Department of Transportation. Further, the corporate authorities of the municipality must adopt a resolution appropriating the MFT funds.
