BACKGROUND:
Mobile broadband data services are the wireless data connections used in City laptop computers to transmit and receive Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) information. Although primarily used by Fire and Police Department staff, mobile broadband data services are also used for enabling mobile access to software applications for the Department of Public Works, Transportation, Engineering and Development, Water Utilities and Electric Utility.
DISCUSSION:
Verizon Wireless has been awarded a State of Illinois Joint Purchase Contract, #CMS793372P. Over the past nine years, the City has received excellent service for its mobile units using the Verizon network. Members of City staff have worked directly with Verizon during this time to ensure that the mobile coverage is reliable throughout all parts of the City and to address any concerns.
Information Technology (IT) works with Verizon and the individual departments to monitor monthly data usage and make changes to plans and recommend line terminations on accounts based on little or no usage. IT will continue to work with Verizon to evaluate new pricing plans and monitor the City's account activity for the purpose of reducing costs.
Council approved 16-309 for Verizon services on 10/4/2016 for $130,000 for 10/1/2016 through 9/30/2017. Monitoring by Staff throughout this term has reduced these costs to $120,000. This has resulted in the lower request for the current contract term.
The term of this contract is one year from October 4, 2017 through October 3, 2018.
