Firefighter paramedic John Halgren was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in 2007. In 2010, Halgren, through his attorney, filed a lawsuit with the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission under the Illinois Occupational Diseases Act claiming that his leukemia was caused in part by exposures he experienced while on duty as a Naperville firefighter. Illinois law presumes certain health conditions, including leukemia, are caused by firefighting and paramedic activities. Halgren is seeking a permanent partial disability (PPD) award and reimbursement for lost time, out-of-pocket medical expenses, and limited future medical expenses.
After negotiation, Halgren has agreed to accept $112,583.94 to resolve this matter. The breakdown of the payment is listed below.
