SUBMITTED BY:                     Kristen Foley, Senior Assistant City Attorney

Firefighter paramedic John Halgren was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in 2007.  In 2010, Halgren, through his attorney, filed a lawsuit with the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission under the Illinois Occupational Diseases Act claiming that his leukemia was caused in part by exposures he experienced while on duty as a Naperville firefighter. Illinois law presumes certain health conditions, including leukemia, are caused by firefighting and paramedic activities.  Halgren is seeking a permanent partial disability (PPD) award and reimbursement for lost time, out-of-pocket medical expenses, and limited future medical expenses.

After negotiation, Halgren has agreed to accept $112,583.94 to resolve this matter. The breakdown of the payment is listed below.

$46.497.75

PPD

$31,440.19

Lost Wages

$26,000.00

Past Medical Expenses
