BACKGROUND:
The Department of Public Works - Public Buildings Operation (DPW-PBO) Division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of City facilities, including the concrete surfaces in the vehicle and equipment storage garages at the fire stations, Electric Service Center, Public Works Service Center and Police Department as well as the jail and the public restrooms and stairways in the City's parking decks and train station. Due to age, use and environmental factors, many of the concrete surfaces are showing wear and deterioration.
CIP Project MB-211, Municipal Facilities Garage Floor Restoration Program, was established in 2017 to maintain and repair concrete surfaces to prevent deterioration and reduce major replacement costs. To date, the following projects have been completed:
* 2018: Restroom floors at the Van Buren and Water Street parking decks were sealed to improve the effectiveness of cleaning and protect from the damaging effects of salt.
* 2019: Garage floor at the Police Department was restored
* 2021 and 2022: First two phases of a five-phase restoration plan for the Public Works Service Center garage were completed.
DPW-PBO has identified hallway floors in the jail at the Police Department for 2023 because the coating has deteriorated and, in some areas, has been worn off. In its current condition, the smooth floor presents a safety issue, especially during wet weather conditions.
