BACKGROUND:
The Department of Public Works - Public Buildings Operations (PBO) is responsible for the maintenance of the building, pedestrian ways, tunnel, stairs, shelters, and lighting at the Downtown Naperville Metra train station. Over the past several years, PBO has focused on completing exterior improvements on the building including replacing the roof, tuck-pointing, and renovating the stairs on the south side of the tracks leading to the pedestrian tunnel. Most recently, the City applied for and received HUD funding in 2019 to replace the doors on the north and south sides of the station and replace the concrete approaches adjacent to the sidewalk to meet ADA requirements.

DISCUSSION:
In 2020, as part of CIP Project MB180, Train Station Platform, Walkway and Stairwell Repair Program, PBO will undertake the Downtown Naperville Metra Train Station Stair Renovations project. This project will renovate the north and south stairwells on the east side of the train station and includes the following work items:
* Prepare the stair surfaces and apply Gar Rock and a DuraWalk coating system;
* Repair the ceiling on the south side of the stairwell, including removing loose concrete, epoxy injections, patching and painting;
* Sand and paint the railings along the walkway and down the stairs on the south side; and
* Remove and replace 20 expansion joints on the train station platform.

Gar Roc is used to patch the concrete and is followed by the application of the DuraWalk coating system which provides a waterproof, slip resistant, and easy to clean surface. Performing this work will enhance pedestrian safety because ...
