On November 5, 2021, Engine 6 and Medic 10 responded to a call of a woman in the roadway. Upon the arrival of Engine 6, the female patient stated that she fell in the roadway and her car ran over her arm. While the crew was attending to the patient, citizen Adam Mastrogiovanni, shared that he witnessed the patient exit her vehicle in the roadway to close the rear hatch; she must have forgotten to place the vehicle in Park because it continued to move.
The patient began to run after her vehicle, fell, and was run over. Without hesitation, Adam ran to the street, stopped traffic, jumped in the vehicle, and was able to bring it to a stop. A passenger was in the vehicle at the time of the incident however they were unable to stop the vehicle.
Adam’s bravery, willingness to get involved, and quick actions prevented a head-on collision with eastbound traffic in addition to possibly preventing the patient from being struck by another vehicle.
