BACKGROUND:
The preservation of the Martin Mitchell Mansion (Mansion) and other Naper Settlement (NS) historic and modern structures that house and display artifacts is an ongoing and integral part of the museum's mission. Artifact and historic structure preservation requires a sensitive blend of managing temperature, humidity, building use, knowing the historic or modern construction fabric, and how the building's finishes impact the way the building breaths. These facets play a crucial role in how well the building and artifacts are preserved. Knowing that each building's environmental equipment is specifically designed to manage and operate that building's preservation needs under prescribed museum guidelines is essential. Improved HVAC system design will efficiently perform and deliver consistent and necessary temperature and humidity control which helps the preservation of these valuable community assets for future generations. It is essential to keep the technology updated and the equipment running as efficiently as possible for the health and longevity of these assets.

Naperville Heritage Society (NHS)/Naper Settlement previously received a National Endowment for The Humanities Environmental Assessment Grant (NEH) which generated detailed recommendations for prioritized, improved HVAC equipment and operations at all NHS buildings. Through this grant the preservation and environmental engineer's focus covered equipment and operations investigation, monitoring temperature, humidity, and general building use over a two-year timespan of data collection.
