BACKGROUND:

In June 2019, the Water Utilities issued Bid 19-129 to obtain a contractor to chemically grout 43 sanitary sewer services in the Cress Creek subdivision. The work is part of a larger ongoing plan to rehabilitate the sanitary sewer system in the subdivision. The goal of the program is to improve system performance by reducing leaks from storm water inflow and ground water infiltration (I&I) in the Cress Creek subdivision.

In 2014, the Water Utilities began a sanitary main rehabilitation program in the Cress Creek subdivision to respond to a flood which occurred in spring 2013. Sanitary manholes were rehabilitated in 2014 and 2015, and the lateral grouting program began in 2015. To date there have been 270 laterals grouted to reduce I&I in the area. Staff continues to work to identify sources of I&I that take up system capacity during wet weather events in Cress Creek.

Through flow monitoring and closed-circuit televising inspection of the system, staff identified significant I&I through some of the sanitary sewer service laterals. Grouting the laterals will significantly reduce the amount of ground water infiltrating into the sanitary sewer system, further reducing the likelihood of a basement backup or sanitary sewer overflow.

The combination of sewer lining, manhole rehabilitation and lateral grouting in the Cress Creek subdivision has made significant improvements in the wastewater system by limiting infiltration of groundwater and inflow of stormwater. Average daily flows decreased by 20 percent between 2013 and 2017 based on flow. Also, there have been no sanitary sewer backups in Cress Creek since 2013.
