BACKGROUND:

As we commence with the detailed design and permitting of the South Extension of the Riverwalk one element that needs greater detail and direction is the theming and signage at the Martin Avenue intersection.  At the February PDC committee meeting our consultant provided us with exhibits to get our input.  Additionally, Kevin Schoolcraft, a representative of Ryan Companies, was present to provide their company’s thoughts.  Ryan is constructing the building at the corner of Martin and Washington, so their input was important since we want the signs for the building and the Riverwalk to complement each other.

At the February meeting Mr Schoolcraft offered to have his design team review the Riverwalk Commission consultant’s work and then provide a design for what they were considering.

DISCUSSION:

Attached is the 10 Martin Avenue Signage exhibit prepared by Ryan Companies.  Also attached are the plan and sign elevation exhibit along with the theming exhibit from the February meeting.  Please note that none of these exhibits show the location of the traffic signal mast arms or posts which encroach on the view of the signs.  At this time, we are simply trying to get an idea of the type and size of signs on these corners.

Mr Schoolcraft will not be able to attend the PDC committee meeting, however the PDC should review all of the exhibits and try to develop preferences for this corner.  If there is solid discussion on this matter at the PDC meeting, then this item will be placed on the Riverwalk Commission meeting on April 10 for more discussion when Mr Schoolcraft will be available to attend.

In an attempt to provide the members of the committee with the big picture of the area I have also attached the Downtown Naperville Wayfinding Master Plan that was endorsed by the City Council earlier this year.  This plan shows the elements and type of signs that will be installed in the downtown and nearby area over the next decade.
