BACKGROUND:

The Water Utilities and the Department of Public Works-Fleet Services Division recommend the purchase of four Ford F250 Service Trucks, a Ford Transit Connect Mini Cargo Van and a Ford Escape, which are approved for replacement in the CY2017 budget.

DISCUSSION:

Five Water Utility vehicles were reviewed and approved for replacement by the Fleet Economic Committee and Fleet Services Manager. Vehicles are evaluated for replacement based on four criteria: age, usage, condition and repair costs. A vehicle must receive a score of 23.0 or greater to be recommended for replacement. Each vehicle qualified for replacement.

Unit 705 is a 2008 Ford F250 and Unit 797 is a 2005 Chevrolet 2500 that will be replaced with two 2017 Ford F250 pickup trucks. Both vehicles are used for customer service, water meter installations, hydrant maintenance/repair, water main break repairs and JULIE locates. Unit 797 will also be equipped with four-wheel drive and a plow so that it can be used for snow removal.

Unit 726 is a 2010 Ford Escape, which will be replaced with a 2017 Ford Transit Connect cargo van with a four-cylinder engine. The van will be used daily for JULIE locates throughout the City.

Unit 727 is an additional vehicle being added to the fleet. The new vehicle was evaluated by City Council for purchase in the 2017 budget for use by the new engineering position in the Civil Environmental Engineering and Construction (CEEC) division. The vehicle will be a 2017 Ford Escape and will be used by the new civil engineer to inspect construction sites and provide transportation as needed.

Unit 755 is a 2005 Chevrolet 2500 with a service body and will be replaced with a 2017 Ford F250 with a service body. The service truck will be used daily to assist the jet flusher truck to clean sewer lines, perform lift station maintenance and repair and customer service call outs. The unit has lower miles but needs to be replaced due to extensive corrosion throughout the chassis and body.

Unit 744 is a 2005 Ford F250 with an auxiliary fuel tank and lift gate. It will be upgraded to a Ford F250 4x4. This is a first response vehicle for water main breaks. The unit also transports parts and materials to repair and excavation sites and is used as a mobile office for the supervisor. The unit fuels various types of equipment in the field and responds to customer call outs.
