TRANSPORTATION ADVISORY BOARD AGENDA ITEM
ACTION REQUESTED:
title
Approve a recommendation to add restrictions to the “U-Turns Prohibited” traffic schedule
body
DEPARTMENT: Transportation, Engineering and Development
SUBMITTED BY: Michael Prousa, TED Project Manager
BACKGROUND:
Staff recently updated the school traffic control plans for each school within Naperville. During this update, observations were made at each school within Naperville. The goal of this project was to improve safety and update the municipal code to align with current and new signage.
DISCUSSION:
When observations at each school were made, illegal U-turns occurred at almost every arrival and dismissal. These U-turns occurred during peak vehicle and pedestrian congestion on streets directly adjacent to the school.
The current “U-turn Prohibited” traffic schedule has a few school adjacent streets listed. The school locations that are currently listed were noted to have fewer cases of illegal U-turn instances. Discussions between district safety officials, Naperville Police Department, and TED staff identified that adding school adjacent streets where pedestrians and vehicles interacted into the “U-turn Prohibited” traffic schedule would improve safety and movement around each school.
The proposed ordinance adds these locations to the traffic schedule. U-turns will continue to be prohibited at all locations currently in the schedule. Prohibited U-turn signage will be installed at each new location providing further enforcement.
