SUBMITTED BY: Jacqueline Nguyen, Director
BACKGROUND:
The Information Technology (IT) Department supports the laptop computers used by City staff. These personal computers need to access the City's virtual private network (VPN) so that staff can access and run various applications such as email, Microsoft Teams, and OnBase using a VPN client safely both in and out of the office. IT currently supports several VPN clients because of tradeoffs in staff requirements, features, and costs.
NetMotion's mobility client is one of these VPN clients and it is particularly well-suited for mobile workers and laptops in police squad cars and field vehicles, which use mobile data networks. NetMotion excels at supporting applications running on cellular data networks such as CAD/RMS MCT applications used by Police and Fire. NetMotion also excels at monitoring and measuring performance of cellular data networks such as the Verizon data network used by Police and Fire. Last year the City had NetMotion licenses for 445 devices that were procured through a cooperative with AT&T, that cooperative is not available this year.
DISCUSSION:
This year the City is procuring 350 NetMotion licenses. The reduction comes from consolidating mobile devices that are not part of Public Safety (Fire and Police) onto the City's other, more general VPN. NetMotion includes Mobility, Diagnostics and MobileIQ. This license package includes software upgrades, maintenance, and support for the client and server-based software within this license package. This package includes diagnostics and analytics that help us measure and monitor the performance of our cellular data network services such as those from Verizon.
