BACKGROUND:

In the fall of 2023, a class of Occupational Therapists from North Central College sent a message to the Riverwalk Commission with several suggestions to improve the hospitality and accessibility along the Naperville Riverwalk.  One of the items noted was to install benches along the low-flow walkway adjacent to Phase I of the Riverwalk since the planter walls are too high for individuals in wheelchairs to reach.

DISCUSSION:

Below is a map showing the subject portion of the Riverwalk.  At four locations the low-flow walkway is widened back into the riverbank, providing a nice and convenient location to install a bench since it will not conflict with any pedestrian traffic along the walkway.  Arrows have been added to indicate these locations.

Direction is being sought from the Planning, Design and Construction committee on preferred locations for benches.  Once locations have been identified the Naperville Park District will add the procurement and installation of the benches to their work plan.
